JAGRATA
Community-Based Disaster Response Project
Bangladesh is one of the most disaster-prone countries in the world. Coastal districts like Bhola are particularly vulnerable to cyclones, storm surges, floods, and river erosion. These recurring disasters have severe impacts on the lives, livelihoods, and essential services of poor and marginalized communities.
JAGRATA is an ongoing community-based disaster response initiative of Manobsur Unnayan Sangstha (MAUS), implemented under the Community Resilience and Inclusive Development Programme (CRIDP).
Project Goals
- Strengthen disaster preparedness and early emergency response
- Enhance community resilience
- Establish volunteer-based emergency support systems
Key Activities
- Formation and training of community-based disaster response volunteer teams
- Awareness campaigns on disaster preparedness, safety, and risk reduction
- Emergency evacuation, relief distribution, and first response support
- Coordination with Union and Upazila Disaster Management Committees and local authorities
- Special support for women, children, elderly, and persons with disabilities
Implementation Approach
JAGRATA follows a volunteer-driven, community-based model. Local volunteers are trained and mobilized under the supervision of MAUS field staff. A Community Development Officer (Disaster) oversees planning, coordination, training, and reporting. During emergencies, trained volunteers act as first responders while maintaining close coordination with local authorities and disaster management committees.
Expected Outcomes
- Improved community preparedness
- Reduced loss of life and property during disasters
- Stronger coordination between communities and local disaster management systems
